The name
The municipality (originally the parish) is named after the farm Melhus (
Norse Meðalhúsar), since the first church was built there. The first element is
meðal 'middle', the last element is the plural form of
hús n 'house'. The farm is one part of a greater and older farm, which had the name
Óðinssalr 'the
salr (
mead hall) of
Odin'.
Coat-of-arms
The coat-of-arms is from modern times (1979). The figure represents the famous
archer Einar Tambarskjelve, who was from the district.
